The House That Launched a Legend

In the summer of 1923, a twenty-one-year-old Walter Elias Disney stepped off a train at Union Station with a cardboard suitcase, forty dollars to his name, and a head full of drawings. He came to Los Angeles to become a director. What he became instead changed the world.

He moved in with his uncle Robert and aunt Charlotte at their modest home on Kingswell Avenue in the Los Feliz neighborhood — a house built in 1914, ordinary in every way except for what would happen inside it. Walt set up a makeshift studio in the garage. He wrote letters, made phone calls, faced rejection after rejection from every Hollywood studio. And then, on October 16th, 1923, he and his brother Roy signed a contract to produce a series of films. The Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio was born.

"All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them."

The house on Kingswell was more than a roof over Walt's head. It was a laboratory of imagination, a place of late nights and early mornings, of pencils and paper and the stubborn belief that cartoons could be more than novelties. The family who lived here — Uncle Robert, Aunt Charlotte, and a restless young dreamer in the garage — could not have known what they were sheltering.

Today the house stands as it always has, quietly dignified on its leafy block, holding a century of history in its walls. We are its stewards now, and we have committed ourselves to its careful preservation — so that the story of where it all began is never forgotten.
